Hey blog friends,
I need your help! I'm working on a book for my girls. It's a book of all the stuff I want them to know about life. Crazy I know - like I can fit all of it into one book!
I've compiled my list of important life stuff but I want to know your thoughts.
What one thing would you tell your teenage daughter? What do you wish someone would've told you? It can be serious or funny. For example, I remember being told to always wear hose to a funeral. That's important. I also wish someone would've told me that the bride shouldn't pay for anything on her wedding day. Shout out- sorry I asked you to help pay for donuts on your wedding day, Allison. I'm ashamed!
So you get the idea. Please leave your lesson in the comment box or email me if it needs a lengthy explanation! This should be fun and educational.
Hmmm...well on a serious note I wish someone would have explained to me the whole "freedom in Christ" concept at an earlier age and in a better way. Would have saved me a lot of heart ache. What I mean is that my early view of following Christ meant you had to follow a lot of rules, and since rules weren't really my thing....you get the idea. Once I understood that having freedom through Christ meant that it was ok to screw it up...a lot, I felt better. Once I understood how much God loved me and that living according to his will (according to His word) was a RESPONSE to how much he loved me, well it just made sense. So if you can write that in a way that a young person could understand...well you are the writer, but I think that would be AWESOME! I also wish that someone would have told me having a baby would hurt...with or without pain meds. That may be for a later chapter though!
ReplyDeleteI will try to think of some other nuggets of Addie wisdom, but one thing my mom did tell me was that when you are doing your makeup you are trying to make it look like you don't have any makeup on. I thought that was pretty good advice.
ReplyDeleteThanks Addie! Good advice! Your mom was right about the make up thing. Thanks for taking the time to comment too!
DeleteHow to sit like a lady! I am embarrassed that #1, I am not very good at it myself, #2, my girls spent way too much time in skorts with bloomers for it to matter, and #3, I considered pants for Easter for my 11 year old because she has no clue!
ReplyDeleteI could never sit still in church! Do you live in Ruston? Thanks for responding!
DeleteYes, it's Nancy Roger. I introduced myself to you at Dinner and a Movie.
DeleteMy learned tidbits could go for a boys or girls, but my dad taught me 2 things that have stuck out. Never put anything on top of your bible. And always call a person by their name. Makes them feel special.
ReplyDeleteMy Pawpaw always said to make sure your car is always at least half full, so you have plenty of gas to make it to a good hospital if there is an emergency.
ReplyDeleteMy Meme always said to shave your legs b/c you never knew when you might have an emergency...and you wouldn't want doctors examining our hairy leg, etc. She also recommended wearing new undies and socks to doctors appointments....and ALWAYS give you seat to someone older than you.
That's good stuff! My grandma always told me to make my bed so if something happened people wouldn't think I was a slob. She'd be a little disappointed!
DeleteThis is definitely a passion of mine - not just for my daughter but for all young girls. I seriously could write all day on this topic - but I won't :) one thing though, tell them to set their standards HIGH - for friends, boyfriends, every thing really - and don't settle. It's ok to be smart, funny, caring, sensitive, athletic and hard working. Love the poem by Marianne Williamson "Our deepest fear" this speaks volumes of what I want for my children
ReplyDeleteI'm on it! Going to read that poem today! Thanks for responding. This is Casey, right! Your parents did a great job with all twelve of y'all. Ha ha! Just 4, I know!
Deleteyes it is Casey :)
ReplyDeleteOh gracious...let's see...my grandmother always told me to never set any other bedside reading on top of your Bible. It should always go on top. :) Also, I wish someone one have told me that it was ok to not be friends with someone. I was such a pleaser as a teen, and no one ever gave me "permission" to not be in a "friendship" that made me miserable. I hope my own girls will learn that you can be nice to someone without giving them a front seat to your life for 15 years just because they think they have to. :)
ReplyDeleteMy dad always told me to that whenever you are dropping someone off somewhere like there house or car that they make it in ok and there car starts before you drive away. That way you are there to help if they need it and its safer.
ReplyDeleteNever put your purse on the floor (not that I carry one). Always respect your elders and keep that glass half full! Always have a smile on your face even in the tough times. You are loved! :) That is all that I can think of. I have been thinking about it for some time now too. I know they are going to be beautiful and very well mannered girls.
ReplyDeleteHey Mandy! One thing my mother always taught me was to respect others no matter what position they are in. Be as respectful to the person who serves you your food at a restaurant as you would be to the President of the United States because you never know what each person is battling inside. Always be gracious to everyone because it may be your smile and kind words that save someone's life. <3
